Steve Makish's KR2

created July 3, 2004

The plane first flew on July 4th, 1987 with a type 4 that Steve Jones is flying now. I had crank problems until I went with Steve Bennett's force one hub. Then I went to a 1800cc/100hp subaru ea81 with a nsi redrive. After a long r&d with cooling problems I had custom griffin radiators made up and it worked fine for a while. It broke the sprague clutch 3 times and each time it cost me 4-500 bucks to "upgrade" it. After about 500 hours the bottom end gave out, (loss of oil pressure). The engine had to be run at 4800 at cruise and 5200 on climb. It just can't take the pounding. I sold it to a gyro copter guy in az and built a 3100 corvair. Due to my own mistake the engine gave out in 85 hours. Push rod geometry was wrong and I did not check it. I had a spare stock block here so it is now a 2700cc and has 165 hours on it now. I just redid the exhaust pipes, the mild steel was cracking, so I went stainless. Total time on the airframe now is about 1200 hours. Now that Bob and I have dependable flying airplanes I can get started on my glasair project with enthusiasm. Bob is helping me build it for flying privileges as trade. He has fat girlfriends that won't fit in the KR (joke).
